EWB-NOVA General Body Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at 7 pm EST. We meet at Virginia Tech’s Northern Virginia Campus (7054 Haycock Road, Falls Church VA). It is 0.1 miles from the West Falls Church Metro.

Guest Speaker - LTC Betsy Evans - March 12th, 2019

LTC Betsy Evans is a Georgia native who was selected to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1996. Graduating in 2000 with a BS in Civil Engineering, Betsy received her commission as an Army Engineer Officer and as a Second Lieutenant. LTC Evans has a Master of Arts Degree in Management and Leadership from Webster University and is the graduate of multiple Professional Military Education courses. 🏭

LTC Evans has served in many leadership positions throughout her career from Platoon Leader to Battalion Commander. In 2003, she would command an engineer company during the company’s 15-month deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 2. Upon returning in 2005, Betsy transitioned from active duty to the Florida National Guard, where she would again Command at the company level, successfully leading her soldiers on two missions to Germany and Honduras.⛰🚙🌎 

In 2011, LTC Evans would become the Brigade Engineer for an Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Betsy was then requested to return to Active Duty to serve as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Commanding General of Military and International Operations, US Army Corps of Engineers, in Washington, D.C.🏛 She returned to Florida in 2014 and assumed command of the Brigade Engineer Battalion where she was selected as the Task Force Commander for Task Force Caiman, a Counter-Transnational Organized Crime Task force with operations in Central America. During her Battalion Command, she activated her Battalion twice in support of Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Irma.🛡 During Hurricane Irma, her Battalion made national news by clearing US 1 from Florida City to Key West in 24 hours, allowing first responders into the Keys to rescue those that weathered the impact of a Category 3 Hurricane in the Lower Keys.🧯 Her Battalion continued to serve alongside FEMA, clearing 500 homes to provide temporary shelter for 12,000 residents who lost their homes. Betsy currently serves as the Domestic Operations Future Plans Chief at the Joint Forces Headquarters with the responsibility of planning activities of Florida Air and Army National Guardsmen ✈️ in response to domestic emergencies and relief efforts.🛢💊💉

Betsy is also a successful business owner, starting E2 Design and Construction,⚙️🛠 a certified general contractor and roofing contracting company, in 2017. Prior, Betsy had a successful career with several construction companies. Betsy is active in several organizations including serving⛰ as the President of the West Point Society of North Florida, Treasurer of the Florida National Guard Foundation, West Point Class of 2000 Class Scribe, and the 26.2 with Donna Galloway Marathon Training program in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Northern Virginia Professional Chapter of EWB-USA is a group of professionals dedicated to helping communities around the world achieve a better quality of life through sustainable development and community empowerment. EWB-NOVA was founded in 2014 and includes professionals from the Northern Virginia-Washington DC Metro area.

   Today,  EWB-NOVA attracts over a hundred professionals and students nationwide who are interested in the global cause. Together, we are making significant progress in assisting the people of El Sauce, Honduras, Cedar Gulch, South Dakota and starting our new International Community Project in Dominican Republic.

   EWB-USA partners with developing communities worldwide and continues to improve the lives of people around the world through basic infrastructure projects such as finding solutions to clean drinking water and proper sanitation. EWB-USA includes over 15,900 volunteers who empower communities to meet these basic human needs.
